Great Indian Bustard

• Large flying bird.
• Terrestrial bird.
• Male birds are taller and heavier thanfemale birds.

Distribution
• Endemic to Indian Subcontinent.
• India and Pakistan.
• Rajasthan (95%), Gujarat, Maharashtra,Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka

Habitat
• Short grasslands.• Open scrub.
• Rain-fed agriculture.

Breeding
• In select grasslands.

Reason for decline in numbers
• Habitat loss.• Poaching.
• Predation of nests by foxes and feral dogs
• Collision in power line.
- Poor eye sight.
- Cannot easily maneuver since the bird is heavy.
- Die due to collision and electrocution.
• Slow rate of reproduction.
 -Only one egg every 1 or 2 years.

Conservation Status
• Critically endangered - IUCN.
• Schedule-I - Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
