Coastal Regulation Zone 

• Coastal Regulation Zone notified under section 3 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. 
• First notification 1991 - Environment Ministry.

Zonation 

• Based on High Tide Line (HTL) and Low Tide Line (LTL). 
• HTL demarcated by National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM).

Coastal Regulation Zone - I

• It includes 
- Areas between the Low Tide Line and High Tide Line. 

- Eco sensitive areas like national parks, sanctuaries, reserve forests, wild habitats, mangroves, corals/coral reefs 

- Breeding grounds of fish.

-  Areas of historical importance. 

• No new construction, except 

- Department of Atomic Energy projects.

- Construction of trans-harbour sea link and roads. 

• Non eco sensitive areas - exploration &extraction of natural gas, salt harvesting and desalination plants are allowed. 

Coastal Regulation Zone - II 

• Includes developed areas landward of HTL.

Coastal Regulation Zone - III

• It includes relatively undisturbed areas. 

• Between HTL to 200m - No Development Zone. 

- Only construction of gardens, pastures, parks, play fields, forestry and salt manufacture from sea water allowed. • Between 200m to 500m. 

- Development allowed after approval of the state. Coastal Regulation Zone - IV 

• Includes areas 12 Nautical miles seaward from the LTL. 

• Traditional fishing allowed.

• Untreated Sewage disposal prohibited.

Coastal Regulation Zone clearance 

• According to 2019 notification. 
- CRZ I and IV - approval by the Union Environment Ministry. 
- CRZ II & III - approval by the state..
